Schematics, boardview & datasheets
Clayi Fix hosts schematics, boardview files, and datasheets for electronics and laptop repair. This guide explains file types, which software to use for each, and how to work with them safely. Files are reference material — accuracy depends on the source and your hardware match.
What Each File Type Is For
- Schematic (PDF) — circuit diagrams, power rails, signal paths, component designators (R/C/Q/U numbers).
- Boardview (BDV, BRD, BV, CAD…) — physical board layout: component placement, nets, test points, pins — used with schematics for tracing.
- Datasheet (PDF) — official specs for ICs and parts: pinout, voltage limits, timing, package type.
Recommended Software by File Type
| File type | Extension | Programs most used |
|---|---|---|
| Schematic PDF | Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit PDF Reader, Sumatra PDF, PDF-XChange Editor; tablet: Xodo, Drawboard PDF | |
| Boardview | .bdv, .brd, .bv, .cad, .fz, .gr, .asc | OpenBoardView (free, open source), FlexBV5 (free + paid), BoardViewer (free, Windows) |
| Datasheet PDF | Any PDF reader above; search helpers: Octopart, AllDatasheet, datasheet catalog sites | |
| Native ECAD (if listed) | .SchDoc, .PcbDoc, KiCad, EAGLE | Altium 365 Viewer (free web viewer), KiCad, EAGLE — only if you have native project files |
| Compressed archives | .zip, .rar, .7z | 7-Zip, WinRAR — extract first, then open with the matching viewer above |
How to Open Schematic PDFs
Download the PDF from the Clayi Fix page, extract if archived, open in a PDF reader with good zoom and search (Ctrl+F). Use schematic + boardview together: schematic shows what the circuit does; boardview shows where parts sit on the board.
Tip: search by designator (e.g. PQ311, R123) or net name (e.g. +3VALW, EC_SMB_CLK) to jump to the right page quickly.
Boardview Software — Which One to Choose
| Program | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| OpenBoardView | Free (open source) | .brd and many legacy formats; cross-platform (Windows, Linux, macOS). Good default for most techs. openboardview.org |
| FlexBV5 | Free + paid Pro | Modern UI, many OEM formats (.bdv, .bv, .fz, .cad…); Pro adds PDF schematic sync and advanced formats. pldaniels.com/flexbv5 |
| BoardViewer | Free (Windows) | Multiple boardview extensions in one Windows app (.bdv, .brd, .bv, .cad, .gr, .fz…). boardviewer.net |
Note: Boardview viewers do not include board files — you must download the matching file from Clayi Fix (or your source) separately.
Boardview Basics — Navigation & Search
Common shortcuts (OpenBoardView): Ctrl+F search part or net; Space flip board top/bottom; mouse wheel zoom; click a component to highlight nets. Use this to find charging IC, EC, BIOS chip, or shorted rail without guessing on the physical board.
How to Use Datasheets
Before replacing a chip or MOSFET, open its datasheet and verify: package (QFN, SOIC…), pinout, absolute max voltage, typical application circuit. Match part number exactly — TPS51225 and TPS51225A are not interchangeable.
PDF readers work for all datasheets. For quick cross-reference, Octopart and similar sites help find alternates — always confirm with the full datasheet PDF.
Matching Files to Your Board
Wrong schematic or boardview wastes hours. Confirm model name, board number (LA-xxxx, DA0xxxx, 6050A…), and revision on the physical board label before relying on a file. One model name can have multiple board revisions with different layouts.
Schematic + Boardview + Datasheet Workflow
- Identify symptom (no power, no charge, no display, USB dead…).
- Open schematic — find the relevant power rail or block diagram.
- Open boardview — locate the same designator on the physical layout.
- Measure voltages/resistance at test points from schematic.
- Open datasheet for suspect IC — confirm pin functions and limits.
- Replace or rework only after cross-checking all three sources.
File Won't Open or Looks Wrong?
- Wrong viewer — .bdv in a PDF reader will not work; use boardview software.
- Corrupt download — re-download; check archive extracts fully.
- Format not supported — try OpenBoardView, then FlexBV5 or BoardViewer.
- Garbled layout — file may be for a different revision; verify board number.
Use Bug report on the Clayi Fix file page if the link is dead or title clearly mismatches the content.
Mobile vs Desktop for Diagram Work
Desktop strongly recommended. Boardview pan/zoom and side-by-side schematic comparison are impractical on small phone screens. Download on PC, organize by model/board in local folders.
Clayi Fix Categories for Reference Files
- Schematic — PDF circuit diagrams
- Boardview — BDV, BRD, BV and related layout files
- Datasheet — component specification PDFs
Programs listed in our Programs category may include boardview tools or PDF utilities — scan before installing.
